The best of the UK’s Life Sciences and Healthcare Technology sector have been crowned at the 2016 Medilink UK Awards.
Held at Coventry’s Ricoh Arena as part of the Med-Tech Innovation Expo on 20th April, the Medilink UK Awards celebrate the pinnacle of new technologies, outstanding business achievements and international success across the sector throughout the past year.
The awards winners and runners-up are as follows:
Start-up award sponsored by HGF for newly established companies in the healthcare sector that have been trading up to three years, and show a promising future.
Winner – Salar Surgical Ltd, from Bridgend, who specialise in the design and delivery of innovative surgical products that are the first to combine three dimensional precision and integrated needle safety for the large and growing intravitreal market, delivering sight saving drugs safely and efficiently.
Runners-up – from Derbyshire Ayva Pharma specialise in delivering operational excellence in the global supply of comparator drugs for clinical trials, and from Manchester Microbiosensor is a medical device company developing disposable point-of-care safety monitors for detecting microbial infection.
Innovation Award sponsored by The BioHub Birmingham acknowledges the achievements of companies which have developed an innovative product or service that will have a significant impact upon patient care or cost and time savings.
Winner – QuantuMDx is a north-east medical technology company developing the Q-POC handheld DNA analyser, which will make gold standard diagnostics affordable and accessible to billions of people around the world.
Runners-up – from Lancaster Cardiocity, who is developing the next generation of patient screening devices and from Cardiff Huntleigh, who is a global provider of innovative, high quality medical equipment for healthcare professionals.
Partnership with the NHS Award sponsored by the National Institute for Health Research which celebrates the work companies and organisations do to build collaborative partnerships with NHS departments and organisations.
Winner – Digital Life Sciences, from Birmingham, who work closely with clients within the healthcare sector to understand and deliver the breakthrough value offered by digital products and services.
Runners-up – from London IXICO, who brings innovative technologies to those involved in researching and treating serious diseases, and from Mid-Glamorgan Rocialle, who helps providers of Primary and Acute healthcare improve efficiency and control infection.
Export award sponsored by Rohde Consulting for companies that have had an outstanding year trading overseas.
Winner – MedaPhor, from Cardiff, a global provider of advanced ultrasound education and training for medical professionals who successfully exported their product ScanTrainer, a virtual-reality based, high fidelity ultrasound skills training.
Runners-up – from Bromsgrove, Kimal Plc, who are an innovative developer, manufacturer and supplier of customised procedure packs and vascular access devices, and from Northampton Hospital Aids, who manufacture evacuation equipment in the UK for safe removal of individuals in event of a fire or emergency.
Outstanding Achievement Award sponsored by Med-Tech Innovation showcases the achievements of companies which have managed to develop and grow their company either through the strategic implementation of a product or service, a review of manufacturing and development processes or collaborative agreements.
Winner – NutraHealth Plc, from Birmingham, received The Queen’s Award for Enterprise for International Trade in 2015, recognising the successful delivery of a carefully considered business plan which has showcased and extended their UK vitamin and supplement manufacturing and branded businesses to customers and consumers globally.
Runners-up – Sidhil from Halifax, who is one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of hospital and home health care furniture and accessories, and from Leicester Inspiration Healthcare, who is a global supplier of medical technology for critical care, operating theatres and other applications.

The nominated organisations comprised the winners of regional awards held throughout the past year across the UK, selected by panels from Medilink UK member organisations.
Paul Sinha, the star of ITV quiz show The Chase, compered the awards, drawing from his experience as both a GP and stand-up comedian to ensure the ceremony was a success.
