The background to the case study / Storyboarding |

Users of the device have reported numerous benefits including reduced mucus production, reduced breathlessness, better sleep and an improvement in energy levels throughout the day.

The challenge / trigger event / the service, product or project in question |
SOE Health’s SoeMac device has been shown to help people breathe more easily. However, the company also wanted to test how effective it would be in the treatment of COPD. |
The solution |
Through the INSTILS project, SOE Health met with an Innovation Advisor, who worked with them to identify the best way to get the SoeMac device into the NHS. Medilink Midlands was able to utilise its network and put SOE Health in touch with the East Midlands Academic Health Science Network, who, through the INSTILS project, were able to part-fund a Medical Technology Trials grant to assist with testing the efficacy of the SoeMac device and connect SOE Health to the University of Derby, CHEATA and Nottingham Trent University. |
The results / evaluation |
The Medical Technology Trials grant has allowed SOE Health to plan a clinical trial focused on COPD sufferers using SoeMac to measure improvements in their breathing, sleep, energy levels, and general quality of life. The objective is to prove to the clinical level, the efficacy and safety of using the SoeMac, both of which SOE Health has witnessed consistently over the past 8 years with thousands of users. The trial is due to start in India and the University of Derby will be analysing the results. Results will be published as soon as the Trial has concluded |
Medilink Midlands’s role/Quote from the company |
“Having worked with Medilink Midlands for a number of years, we were familiar with the support they offered. An INSTILS adviser made us aware of the support available as part of a Med Tech Trial grant and through them, we were introduced to the East Midlands Academic Health Science Network. This support has led us to work with the University of Derby and India, and we are hopeful that the trials will yield promising results” Neil Stentiford, MD. |
Medilink Midlands’s role/Quote from the Advisor
“Medilink sits at the heart of industry, academia and the NHS. Our unique position allows us to help companies such as SOE Health to innovate and not only create new products and services but explore and adapt existing ones to solve additional health issues. Our relationships and connectivity within the Midlands life sciences sector has allowed us to support SOE Health, alongside the East Midlands Academic Health Science Network, to test their products in a clinical setting, allowing further exploration into the capabilities of their medical technology.” Caroline Sykes, Innovation Advisor.
